Many people think that when ordering a collar, all they have to do is "roughly" measure their dog's neck and it will somehow fit. Then the package arrives and it turns out: it either almost slides off their head or you can barely fit a finger under it. With a little attention, this can be completely avoided - we'll show you how to do it right the first time.

Why is the exact size so important?

A paracord collar doesn't stretch like a rubber or fabric collar, so every inch really counts. A collar that's too tight is uncomfortable and can rub against the skin, while a collar that's too loose can easily slip off while walking - which can lead to scary and dangerous situations.

Step by step for measurement

  • Use a soft measuring tape. If you don't have one at home, a piece of string will do – then measure with a ruler.
  • Measure at the widest, thickest point of the neck, where the collar will sit (usually at the lower third of the neck).
  • Leave two fingers of space. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the measuring tape and your dog's neck – that's a good fit.
  • Measure while the dog is standing, not when the dog is lying curled up - the thickness of the neck can vary depending on the dog's position.
  • Measure twice to be sure. If you notice a difference, use the average.

Common mistakes to avoid

Estimating neck thickness based on head diameter alone can be misleading, always measure the neck itself.

Measuring with a thin, stretchable string, which stretches as you go and gives inaccurate results.

For a growing puppy, don't expect it to outgrow itself in a few months - in this case, it's worth choosing an adjustable collar.

What should you do if you are unsure?

If you are not sure about the measurements, feel free to write to us with the exact numbers, and a photo would also help a lot - we are happy to advise you before you order the collar. It is better to exchange messages than to have a piece that does not fit well.

Would you like to be sure? The ChiliCord EbDesign team will be happy to discuss the sizing with you before every order so that the collar fits your pet perfectly the first time.
